Luna Cove: Balboa Park Photos

Happy Tuesday! I'm so very excited to post our maternity photo session from last month. I was 27 weeks pregnant at the time and looking through these photos now, it's amazing how tiny Luna is, yet how big she felt then! Luna has always had such a strong presence with us, even when she was blueberry-sized. Her due date is now less than 7 weeks away and we are greatly anticipating her arrival. We are blessed that Luna's Auntie Cori is such an amazing photographer, and has documented this time so beautifully for us. This was such a special, fun day. We're looking forward to one more photo shoot before baby comes, then next will be newborn photos! So crazy!

These are a few of our favorites from the day, but you can check out the whole set on CJeanPhotography, and be sure to leave my sister some love on Facebook!

Make it a great day, friends!

Recipe: Pineapple Stuffed Peppers

With the rising temperatures and growing days, Summer is really starting to feel just around the corner. Oscar had a craving for something light and refreshing, so I whipped up this little recipe for lunch the other day. Today we celebrate thirty-three weeks of pregnancy (getting so close!) and Luna is supposed to be around the size of a pineapple. Couldn't be more appropriate!

This recipe is SUPER simple, fast, and easy to make. It's loaded with potassium and vitamin C, healthy unsaturated fats, and a nice pack of protein from our fungi friends.

Ingredients:

Directions:
  1. Chop up all ingredients and mix together in large mixing bowl
  2. Add tamari, olive oil and mashed avocado
  3. Halve bell peppers, deseed, stuff with the citrusy delicious mix
  4. Serve with a slice of lime (or two!)
Enjoy, friends! And just a tip, if you're looking for a completely raw recipe, you can use salt in place of the tamari. Happy Friday and I hope it's a whimsical weekend wherever you may be!

Weekend Recap: Big Sur & Carmel

Hello friends and happy Monday! We're back after a nice four-day-long trip up and down the California coast. What an experience! We had the opportunity to witness and be a part of a beautiful elopement, deep in the Redwood forest in Carmel, about 40 miles north of Big Sur. We stayed in an amazing dome house, perfectly named "Jewel in the Forest". The trees, the birds, the ocean and the air, being with Oscar and Luna in nature's hands... It was all so indescribably awakening and healing to the soul. We truly feel a calling to leave the city and pursue life in the wilderness; we know and see we're on a path that will take us there, and it's such an invigorating prospect! To rewild our children and family will be a beautiful thing, indeed.

My sister was kind enough to let me use her fancy camera for the weekend! So I'll be having a ton of photos posted sometime here in the next week or two, whenever I can get to editing and trimming down from the hundreds of photos we have. Oscar has been loving the video camera we got from my Dad, so you also might start seeing some footage from our little adventures here soon! In the meantime, here are the few iPhone photos I took the time to snap. Enjoy!

That's all for now, folks. I'll be looking forward to getting more pictures posted soon. Have a beautifully blessed week and don't forget to let your light shine!

Natural Remedies: Crystal Deodorant

Eating a good diet and drinking enough water can greatly reduce unpleasant body odor, but sometimes that's just not enough! We all know that conventional antiperspirants work great to prevent sweat, while deodorants do a standup job acting as odor neutralizers. But what most of us don't know, though, is how these products work, and how they can affect our bodies physically, therefore energetically, spiritually, and so on.

The skin absorbs around 60% of what we apply to it topically. I remember being blown away when I learned that in beauty school! What's crazier to think is it was estimated that the underarms and genitalia have a 100% absorption rate, according to a study conducted by Naturopath Ananda Mahony. Most antiperspirants on the market contain aluminum, a heavy metal that can travel into your lymphatic system (which supports your immune system, and does a whole bunch other stuff, too!) under your armpits. Aluminum is linked to breast cancer and Alzheimer's disease. Aside from aluminum, most antiperspirants contain parabens, a type of chemical preservative which actually mimics the hormone estrogen in our body, as well as disrupts our body's endocrine system- virtually affecting every cell in our body. Although thought to be better for you than antiperspirants, most deodorants still contain parabens and synthetic fragrance.

What's our alternative to absorbing all those toxins in conventional products? We use a natural crystal deodorant, which is derived from potassium alum, a mineral salt that naturally occurs on rocks as encrustations. When the human body sweats, it releases salt and water, which has no smell of its own. The odor is actually produced from bacteria living on the skin. Potassium alum works by inhibiting bacterial growth, therefore preventing an unpleasant odor when we sweat. Granted, it doesn't help with your underarms staying dry! So if that's important to you, here's an easy recipe you can mix up in the kitchen, pour in a jar or an old deodorant container, and apply each morning after you use the crystal.

  • 1/4 cup arrowroot powder
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 5 TBS coconut oil
  • 20 drops essential oil of your choice (optional)

It will be easiest to mix and pour into a container if the coconut oil is melted down first! It will take a few hours for the coconut oil to solidify afterward, and voila! Homemade deodorant. Hope this gives you some good ideas for natural alternatives to your conventional products.

We'll hitting the road before the sun rises tomorrow. Looking forward to an adventure with our family & the trees in Big Sur! Much love and make it a joyful weekend, friends.

Photo Diary: Big Bear

A few weeks ago we had a wonderful opportunity to spend the weekend in Big Bear at a cabin recently acquired by a dear friend's family. It was such a blessing to have this mini getaway, not only for rest and relaxation, but also for the chance to spend time with a family that is close in age, with a baby, and makin' it happen! Lauren and I have been friends since our Paul Mitchell beauty school days, back in 2005. In 2010, we shared an awesome experience of living together on two acres of Redwood forest, deep in the Santa Cruz mountains. She now lives in Las Vegas with her supportive man, Chris, and beautiful son, Isaac. We are looking forward to more adventures with this family and are blessed to have them in our lives!

We had a wonderful celebration for Luna's coming arrival this past weekend. There really are no words to describe the amazing experience it was. So much love, it was overwhelming! This upcoming weekend we're headed up to Big Sur (REDWOODS!), where some friends of ours are eloping. I was asked to come along as the photographer/hair stylist/makeup artist, and no doubt Oscar and I will definitely be enjoying the little vacation it's providing us with as well. Should be a really exciting time!

Happy May and happy Monday! Hoping it's beautiful and bright, wherever you may be.
